How a Simple Font Change Boosted My Brand’s Visual Appeal

When I first started my small candle-making business, I focused on perfecting the scents, packaging, and customer experience. But something was missing. The labels on my candle jars looked a bit generic, and my Instagram posts didn’t quite capture the warm, cozy vibe I was going for. It wasn’t until I started learning about typography that I realized the issue wasn’t the design overall—it was the font.

I stumbled upon Hay, a script font that immediately caught my eye. Its smooth curves and clean lines felt both elegant and approachable. Unlike other script fonts I’d seen, Hay didn’t feel overly fancy or hard to read. It had just the right balance of personality and professionalism, which was exactly what my brand needed.

Hay belongs to the Script Amp category of fonts, making it ideal for use in branding materials where a touch of sophistication and warmth is desired. It’s not just a font—it’s a subtle storytelling tool that communicates quality and care. Whether it’s used in logo design, product labels, or social media graphics, Hay elevates the visual tone of any brand asset.

One of the first places I used Hay was on my candle labels. I switched from a basic sans serif to Hay for the product names and key phrases like “Lavender Relax” and “Cozy Night.” The result? A noticeable improvement in how customers perceived the product. It looked more artisanal, more intentional. Even my thank-you cards and packaging inserts felt more personal and polished.

Hay works best as a display font—perfect for headlines, short phrases, logos, and packaging titles. It’s not meant for long paragraphs, but rather for grabbing attention and adding a decorative accent to your brand’s visual identity. I found it especially effective in social media graphics where I wanted to highlight a key message or promotion.

When designing for small labels or mobile screens, readability is key. Hay’s clean structure and open spacing make it surprisingly legible even at smaller sizes. I used it on my product tags and menu cards for a pop-up shop event, and customers had no trouble reading the names of each scent or special offer.

One of the most powerful ways to use Hay is in font pairing. For body text or supporting copy, I paired Hay with a clean sans serif font like Montserrat. This combination created a balanced visual hierarchy—Hay brought warmth and character to headlines, while the sans serif kept the rest of the content crisp and modern. For more formal pieces like packaging boxes or business cards, I experimented with pairing Hay with a classic serif font for contrast and elegance.

Typography plays a bigger role in brand perception than many small business owners realize. The right font can influence first impressions, enhance readability, and build trust with your audience. Since switching to Hay, I’ve received more compliments on my branding materials, and customers say my products feel more premium and cohesive.

Hay is also versatile enough to work across a variety of industries. A local bakery could use it on their packaging to convey a handmade, friendly feel. A skincare brand might feature Hay on product labels to evoke elegance and care. Even a café menu or online shop banner can benefit from its smooth, inviting curves.

Before using Hay commercially, I made sure to check the licensing terms. It’s important to verify that the font includes commercial use rights, especially if you’re printing packaging, selling templates, or creating merchandise. I also checked the available file formats, ligatures, and multilingual support to ensure it would work well across all my design needs.

Switching to Hay was a small change that made a big difference. It helped unify my brand visuals, from printed labels to digital ads. If you’re a small business owner or entrepreneur looking to refresh your brand identity without overcomplicating things, consider how a simple font choice like Hay can transform your look and help your business feel more consistent, memorable, and professional.
